Riaity Bites: Of Rules and Exceptions

This is my article for my Riality Bites column on SunStar Davao's Lifetsyle section, published on September 22, 2010. Since it premiered on the cable channel, the romantic comedy “He’s Just Not That Into You” (HJNTIY) has been played and re-played over and over again on the HBO Channel. I first heard about “He’s Just Not That Into You” the when it was mentioned in the hit TV show Sex and the City. The book from which the film was adapted from was actually a self-help book by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo. It was published in 2004 and was even featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show. In 2009, a film adaptation of the book was made an all-star ensemble cast which included Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Connelly, Scarlett Johansonn, Ben Affleck, and Justin Long. It featured multiple storylines of guys meeting girls, guys breaking up with girls, and various permutations and combinations of romantic entanglements. Guys and girls alike were equally amused and annoyed by the characters and their stories. Gigi (Ginnifer Goodwin), the narrator probably earned the most thumbs downs. She was dumb and stupid about love and relationships. And even when she was made aware of…

Why Travel?

Our physical body both allows us to experience the world. At the same time, it also limits our experience of the world. In this connected world that we live in, we can learn and experience the world through other people's words, photos, videos, and stories. We can virtually experience the world at our own homes. However, travelling and actually experiencing other places is still an experience that one should always crave for. Much as I love Davao City, I also love going to other places. Why? Because it is an opportunity to try and learn unique things, experience exciting adventures, eat exotic food, meet new people, gain fresh perspectives, and grow as a person I believe that one of life's goals is to learn in order to grow. And travelling is one way of achieving this goal. By travelling, your senses as assaulted by a multitude of sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures that enrich your mind and add to your data bank of knowledge. With these, one's appreciation of things, food, artifacts, and places is broadened and enriched. Through these sensations experience by our body, our minds are broadened, our soul is enriched. Travelling also exposes a person a…

My New Love: Grant Imahara of Mythbusters

Undeniably, I love geeks, more so engineers. So it's not a surprise that my new boypren is Grant Imahara. He's not my boyfriend, ok? But I am majorly crushing on him. MAJOR! MAJOR! Grant is one of the hosts of Discovery Channel's Mythbusters. He is an electrical engineer by profession. He worked by George Lucas' Industrial Light and Magic. He was part of the teams that made The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, A.I.: Artificial Intelligence, Van Helsing, The Matrix Reloaded, and Revolutions, among others. And he's one of the few people who operates R2D2. Yup, the robot in the Star Wars movies. Aaand... he engineered the custom circuit of the Energizer Bunny's arms. AMAZING, right?! Plus he has written a book about building robots and he made his own champion robot, the Deadblow. And did I already mention he's a host of Mythbusters, the best geek/nerd show on TV?! I know I mentioned it already, I just had to say it again. :P He is the ultimate geek. LOOOOVE! I'd marry Grant in a heartbeat. Even if he is a impotent, has violent tendecies, or is…

Shin Woo and Go Mi Nam Sticky Notes

All over the Philippines (and the rest of the world), girls are swooning over ANJell, the fictional Korean Pop Boy Band that star in the Korean Drama You're Beautiful (He's Beautiful on ABS-CBN). I was able to watch all the episodes of this series months ago, courtesy of Brendel, who's addicted to everything Korean. And I liked it. I found the female lead character too gullible and annoying, but a bit endearing. But it was Shin Woo that really made me fall in love with this show. My cousin Mae also fell in love with Shin Woo, so I immediately thought of her when I saw the Shin Woo sticky notes sold at the Davao TLCShop. The sticky notes are heart-shaped with a doodle of Pig Rabbit. It has yellow notes on one side and green on the other. It also has Tae Kyung, Jeremy, and Go Mi Nam versions. And mine (which I got for free!) is the Go Mi Nam version. Lookie... I like office supplies and I find these sticky notes really cute and useful. I hope Joeanne of Davao TLCShop will be able to find some Kim Sam Soon stuff for me. :) Davao TLCShop accepts…

Before and After

That was me (with blockmate Benj Pasaporte) grudgingly doing field work at San Pablo, Laguna's Seven Lakes. I weighed around 160 pounds with a waistline of 38. LULS! This is me now... Well, PicLyf's camera is a bit deceitful, I have chubbier cheeks and a bigger tummy than what the photo shows. Anyway, I am currently around 135 lbs (or more, I really don't know) with waistline down to just 30. Before I took steroids, I was 130 lbs with waistline 28. Point is... a lot of things have changed since 2003. And it's not just the looks. I am much more confident and happier where I am. Being a science major and the potential for a career in science was exciting to me. I had been training for it for around 9 years before I shifted gears, went home to Davao, studied Education, shifted gears yet again... and is now a writer. Online and offline. Even as a kid, I had wanted to be a writer. But life happened. I went to a science high school. Took up a course that excited me. I'm glad those things happened. But I'm happier I am where I am right now. Doing…

For Diyosa’s Better Productivity

Yes, I am obsessed with this gadget. As a multi-tasker who does a lot of different jobs and a girl interested in multiple hobbies, I think the Asus Eee PC T101 MT will increase my productivity. My fellow WordCamp Ph 2010 organizers and I had a meeting last weekend, and I kept on telling them and myself how easier it would be for us to coordinate if my netbook's screen could swivel like this... And imagine how much easier it would be for me to take down notes during a press conference, event, or while making a script for the TV show I am working for if I can do this: And oh, the orientation of the display can be turned vertical for easy reading of eBooks. And imagine how much easier it is to play games (*ehem*PLANTS vs ZOMBIES*ehem*) using the stylus instead of the mouse??? Hehe! Here's a video of more photos of the Asus Eee PC T101 MT: You agree this will make the Diyosa work (and play) better, yes? I hope you do coz I am definitely targetting this baby. ;-)
